Courtney Hodrick (Research Focus »Democratic Vistas«)
»Hannah Arendt and the Overcoming of Philosophy of History«Abstract
Courtney Hodrick will present her book project, which traces Hannah Arendt's engagement with Hegel throughout her career. Framed as an answer to the question »Gibt es ein Denken, das nicht tyrannisch ist? (Is there a type of thinking that is not tyrannical?),« this book explores Arendt's lifelong attempt to reunite philosophy and politics and the regularity with which she sets herself against Hegel's philosophy of history in order to do so. In attending to Arendt's characterization of Hegel's philosophy as a metaphysics, and the centrality of questions of temporality, redemption, and immanence / transcendence to her work, Hodrick draws out the Jewish political theology that undergirds Arendt's search for an alternative to the philosophy of history that still dominates our own time. In this colloquium, she will present an overview of the book and its chapters, as well as a close reading of the 1953 text »Ideology and Terror,« on which the first chapter centers.
